Standard 6 student missing after fall into monsoon drain. 21/03/2008

21/03/08 - I received a call from one of the resident in Kg Tawas at 04.30pm, saying that a Standard Six student of SRJK (C) Kg.Tawas fell into one of the drain and has gone missing for more than an hour. The student who is 12 years old fell into the monsoon drain which was build at the road shoulder.

There were more than 100 residents who came to the place including the State Assemblyman YB Sum Cheok Lek, the school headmaster, officer’s from Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah and also later and engineer from Local Council (DBI)

The 12 years old boy fell into the drain while he was cycling with 2 others friends. The boy fell into the drain while searching for the road track in the heavy rain. The overflowing water in the monsoon drain has caused this tragedy.

The bomba officers immediately launched the search and rescue to find the missing boy along the monsoon drain and were unable to find any trace of the boy. At 6.00pm, the spokesman for Bomba informed me that a group of 7 rescuers from the bomba have started the search along the monsoon drain for more than 500 meters which is 5 meters in deep, yet unable to find the boy. The spokesman also later informed me that he will continue with the search at the main river with the help of 2 scuba divers with the boat.

The DBI Engineer who came to the place of the incidents was unable to give any answers to the family members and he also avoided meeting me. The residents informed me that 10 years ago, a similar incident happened but the boy was saved.

I told the press that I will officially write a letter asking for an explanation of this incident from DBI authorities on why there were no actions taken since the previous incident. Furthermore, I will propose to the relevant authorities to either install guardrail railings or to cover the monsoon drain with pre-cast concrete.

I am much saddened by this incident which could have been avoided if the relevant authorities had taken remedial actions much earlier.

I visited the place this morning where I met Bomba officers who informed me the schoolboy has yet to be found and they are still taking necessary actions to comb the area

YB Kula, its good that you personally attended this incident. That is what the people want from a “People’s Representative”.

As usual, changes will only be made or implemented after some big incidents had happened, such as dead. Very common is the installation of traffic light at road junction. After a certain numbers of fatality accidents, then the authorities will take proper action. This was the way the previous state gov runs. But now with the opposition running the state gov, I strong believe things will change. I hope proper local councillors will be elected, as they are the eyes and ears of the people.

I am from Ipoh and strongly support DAP. I have personally seen and follow how DAP representatives help the public. I have met you a few times especially your ceramah. With you actively in Perak and opposition running the state gov, things will be improved and changed.

Keep up the good work. Now is the time to show the people what DAP is fighting for.
