21/3/08 -In 1969 I represented my school ACS Lumut to play soft ball in Ipoh. One thing that I always remember of Ipoh was having seen the signage “Utamakan -lah Bahasa Kebangsan” which was located at the entrance of Bukit Merah, along the road to Lumut from Ipoh
To me this particular signage was significant as it was a reminder of the importance of the national language. Our national language was renamed as Bahasa Malaysia in the 70’s and then it was changed to Bahasa Melayu some time in 80’s. Now it has been reverted to Bahasa Malaysia as it seems it would then encompass all the communities in Malaysia.
To day on the way to a temple function in Batu Gajah I decided to look and take a picture of the signage. To my surprise due to widening of the road this particular signage was just knocked down and thrown on the side of the road. I felt sad as what I first remember most of Ipoh has been discarded.
I wanted to bring my pick up to take the signage away but unfortunately it weighs a ton at least!
I will now write to the public works department to ask them to undo this discarding and give priority to resurrect to its former glory.
