MB closing one eye on squatter's issue in perak. 20/07/2007

Many of the residents of Kg. Thye Lee are people who have resided all their lives at this village. Kg. Thye Lee was first settled by many of the lower income group some more then 90 years ago. Kg. Thye Lee was in those days a village which was quite a distance from Ipoh. But with rapid development over the years Kg. Thye Lee falls within the City Council of Ipoh jurisdiction. At one time there were more then 150 families residing at the village but now there are only about 70 families left.

For many years the owner of the land has been collecting rental from the residents. But this collection of rental by the owner has ceased some more then 5 years ago.

Those who were interested to develop this village had one time or the other used force to move out the residents. But many residents did not bow to this out side pressure but decided to stay put there. Even 3 days ago some 3 residents were paid an undisclosed compensation and they moved out of the village. Many of the residents have lodged police reports for fear that this out siders will cause harm to the residents. In fact a particular resident place of business was burnt down 3 times in 3 years! So much so this resident just moved out of fear.

After the owner refused to collect rentals from the residents the residents were thus squatting at the said land measuring about 1.6ha. It has all basic amenities including electricity, telephone water and temples to serve the residents.

The local MCA Assemblyman for Buntong Yik Pooi Hong who is also a local developer has been approached to settle this issue but noting has come out of it. Many residents have raised the issue as he is developing a shopping cum flats commercial complex worth millions of Ringgit just a stone throw from this Kg. Thye Lee. Will he also be involved in the development of Kg.Thye Lee? YB Yik must disclose his interest on Kg. Thye Lee if any, as many letters of appeal to him by the local residents have been unattended by him.

Finally the DAP raised this issue at the Perak State Assembly in 2005.The Menteri Besar(MB) gave a written reply and assured the residents that some 37ha have been set aside in Pusing, Kinta to relocate the Kg. Thyee Lee residents and many other squatters in and around Ipoh. But this promise by the MB has yet to be fulfilled. Many questions need to be answered by the MB 1) Why the said land of 37ha has yet to be alienated by the government 2) Why the delay and slowness in the action by the State Government? 3) Why the promise of achieving ZERO squatter status by 2005 by the state government remains unfulfilled? 4) Are the “little Napoleons” who are delaying the alienation of the lands if so the MB must act to correct this?

The 70 odd residents are all gathered at the MB’s office to hand over the memorandum as contained in the annexure. All the 70 families and their dependants are from the lower income group. The MB cannot and should not close one eye on this issue.
