PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEMS
Ipoh’s needs
IN view of the launching of RapidPenang, I would like to focus some attention on the condition of public transport inlpoh,
Ipoh’s public transport system has not shown much improvement, besides the addition of a few air-conditioned buses.
Almost every bus is in a run-down and dirty state. There is no standard bus fare, leading to varying charges by bus conductors. Some bus conductors do not issue tickets even after the passenger has requested it several times.
The bus service slows down immensely after 6pm and comes to a halt around 7pm.
Unlike in Kuala Lumpur, taxis in Ipoh do not use the meter. Drivers are known to charge exorbitant fares.
The lack of public transport is one of the main reasons why Ipoh is a noticeably quieter town when night falls.
Incomes of businesses like coffee shops in certain areas are deteriorating due to a lack of customers at night.
Public transport is an extremely important factor in a city’s development, and I urge the authorities to look into this matter and improve the quality of public transport in Ipoh, especially the bus service.

The deplorable public transport system has not been addressed by the relevant authorities. Thus the public are shying away from using the public transport system and many are acquiring their own vehicles as a means of transport. In this process unnecessary increase of vehicles is taking place on the Malaysian roads not to mention the environmental costs
What is required is an efficent, cheap and reliable transport system. When will this ever happen?

The 4 billion write off by MOT can be used for public transport improvement in all major towns in Malaysia to reduce climate change and green house effect. Look at Beijing. Many are concern about the Games when the pollution levels are high. The Government must step in. The city buses must run on a regular time table which is possible in Ipoh so that people will know when the next bus is coming. Also the local council must have a part. Look at what happen to all the Housing joint venture between DBKL and private. Where the income goes to? Instead DBKL allow a big hotel with parking bay along Jalan Ipoh just after Maxwell School which blocks the traffic.
